Max Richter, the German born, British composer, has recently recomposed Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” with the great success. Not losing Vivaldi’s genius and originality, Richter was able to intensify Vivaldi’s known musical sequences and motifs with separating them rhythmically or expanding the same with the background harmonic deep expressions, and lace them all together into a new dimension renewing the whole seasonal cycle–“Spring,” “Summer,” “Fall,” and “Winter.”
Why is it that artists often have to go back, dare to touch the old classics and create out of the original work something new? For writers it is an enormous challenge to dare and try to write the Shakespearean or Petrarch sonnets today (uuh, don’t I now it?), touch under the skin of the old romantics such as Goethe or E.A. Poe, but this challenge is also like reciting the “sacred wow,” going back to the spring that once opened the pith of the artist mindless heart with the creative fire. Every work of art is an expression of freedom, where by which the artist shapes his/her form of existence and presence in the world.
“We have made you a creature neither of heaven nor of earth, neither mortal nor immortal, in order that you may, as the free and proud shaper of your own being, fashion yourself in the form you may prefer.” Giovanni Picco della Mirandola, Oration of the Dignity of Man
